Marine experts at the Birmingham aquarium have found that using the 30 L biorb aquarium they can raise hundreds of their tiny seahorse babies. The program has proven to be very successful using the biorb as with its specially designed unique filter system it makes a great place for the seahorses to grow and develop.
Bristol Aquarium aquarist Verity Tounsend said: “We have been successfully breeding two species of seahorse here for the past year. However, by raising them in conventional aquaria we were having problems keeping the tiny fry (baby seahorse) away from the surface tension of the water. The biOrb’s shape creates a more circular current and the fry mortality rate has decreased dramatically. The current keeps them away from the surface tension and the fry also gain weight more quickly because the design of the biOrb allows them to stay suspended close to their plankton-like food.”
It is quite incredible to think that out of the approximate 35 species left of seahorses in the wild that pretty much all of them are endangered up with programs like the Bristol aquarium that are trying to breed seahorses to take the pressure off of the natural wild seahorses we may be able to save them for future generations.
Seahorses are very elegant and beautiful creature and fortunately their beauty and elegance has been the downfall as many people want to capture them as pets and also the used as herbal remedies which has crippled the seahorse population as the demands for these herbal remedies and pets boomed in Asia.
But hopefully by using the biorb aquarium they should be able to re-establish the seahorse populations and will have these beautiful creatures in our world for years to come it is nice to think that the biorb design is not only stylish but also serves a practical use for the growth and development of the creatures who make it their home.
I’m a big fan of the biorb’s and here is just another example of how sea life thrives in the environment of the biorb these fish tanks are by far one of the best aquariums to keep fishing as with their unique filtration system and the design of the biorb they seem to be happy and healthy.
